Most recently, Nepal's government has started to put interest in several of tunnel projects for hydropower, river diversion and transportation. Shortage of knowledgeable and skillful graduates has been always a determining factor for the need in inviting foreign consultation and construction firms with huge sums of project payments. Now, the programmes have been in pipeline to address the technical gap which is a prerequisite for human resources, enterprises and planning.

A conference of partners and intellects has been organised in October in Nepal for developing a draft curriculum for the same. The proposed curriculum covers research and practice on geological profile, tunnel design, construction, maintenance and repair, and security.

It is yet to see if Nepal can move towards self sufficiency in knowledge, skills, entrepreneurship, management, planning, and most importantly research abilities on civil engineering, more specifically in the context of Nepali developmental demand.
