Forest Resources of Nepal

Nepal has topographic variation from about 150 meters above sea level at the southern border to the highest mountain in the world (Everest at 8 848 m) in the north. Nepal has a tropical climate in the south and temperate and alpine climates in the north. Forest types also vary accordingly.

Forest Types
Tropical Forests (in Terai, Bhavar regions)
Upto 1000masl from lowlands
Sal (Shorea robusta), Khair (Acacia catechu), Sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo), Characteristic grass species are Saccharum spontaneum, Phragmites karka, Arundo donax and Eulaliopsis binata in the grasslands, The forests are evergreen with trees suitable for high temperature and more rainfall.
Sub-Tropical Forests (in Siwalik hills, Southern part of Mahabharat Range)
1000 masl -2000 masl in the west
1000 masl -1700 masl in the east
Chir Pine (Pinus roxburghii), Schima wallichii, Castanopsis indica, Utis (Alnus nepalensis),  
Lower Temperate Forests (in Mahabharat Range , Middle mountainous region of Nepal)
2000 masl -2700 masl in the west
1700 masl -2400 masl in the east
Oak (Quercus species), Blue Pine (Pinus wallichiana),
Upper Temperate Forests 

2700 masl -3100 masl in the west and centre
 2400 masl -2800 masl in the east
Khasru (Quercus semecarpifolia), Rhododendron arboreum, Blue Pine (Pinus wallichiana), Juniperus indica, Cedrus deodara, Fir (Abies pindrow)
Plants of medicinal value are found abundantly.
Sub-Alpine Forests

3000 masl to 4200 masl in the west
around 3000 masl in the east
Fir (Abies spectabilis), Khasru (Quercus semecarpifolia), Rhododendron spp, Birch (Betula utilis), Juniperus indica
There is no tree in alpine zone, but shrubby rhododendrons and junipers and some other shrubby species (Hippophae rhamniodes, Cotoneaster microphyllus) are found at lower elevations, up to 4500 m.  Above 4500 m there is permanent snow cover.

The 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), also known as “Rio+20”, was a historical event. Held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 2012, this landmark gathering agreed on various sets of actions to make the world a better and more sustainable place to live in. In particular, the document “The Future We Want”, outlined many of the measures countries across the world should pursue and implement, in order to translate the principles of sustainable development into practice.

As a parallel event to UNCSD, the 1st World Symposium on Sustainable Development at Universities” (WSSD-U-2012) was held on 5-6 June 2012. Attended by 120 delegates from 26 countries, WSSD-U-2012 produced, among other things, the book „Sustainable Development at Universities: New Horizons“, as Volume 34 of the series „Environmental Education, Communication and Sustainability“. This ground-breaking publication on the theory and practice of sustainable development, is one of the most comprehensive publications on sustainability at universities ever produced, focusing on both industrialised and developing nations. But if anything, WSSD-U-2012 demonstrated the need for a continuation of the dialogue among sustainability academics and practitioners, so as to address the issues, matters and problems at hand.
It is against this background that the “2nd World Symposium on Sustainable Development at
Universities” (WSSD-U-2014) will be organised by Hamad bin Khalifa University, a member of Qatar Foundation, and the Research and Transfer Centre “Applications of Life Sciences” of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, under the auspices of the RCE Hamburg and Region.

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY: online collaboration (about Nepalese Education System) with students and professor of Georgia State University

Nepalese Teacher Network for Sustainable Education (NTNSE) is looking for B.Ed or M.Ed. students to take part in online collaboration with students and professor of Georgia State university. The topics are based in educational system of Nepal, teachers professional issues, national educational purposes and other 2. The selected students from Nepal will have to spend a fall semester contributing about 2 hours a week online, writing blogs and discussing with students and professor with Georgia State University.

We have developed an online application form. We expect applications mostly from B.Ed. / M.Ed. students.
