EarthCorps is now recruiting for their 2014 International Corps Members! If you or someone you know might be interested in applying, please pass along the following position announcement:

EarthCorps offers a six-month service learning program in Seattle, Washington, USA that brings together emerging environmental leaders to learn the fundamentals of environmental service, community building and leadership. EarthCorps charges no tuition for its services and in fact supplies insurance, individual host families, food, gear and a monthly stipend to all international participants.

Before you apply, please note that EarthCorps is required by the US government to ensure that every applicant meets strict criteria in order to qualify for a US J-1 Trainee visa. EarthCorps has established the following criteria to be considered for their program:

  • Between 18-28 years old
  • No Criminal Record
  • Conversational English
  • Four year college degree in the environmental field and one year of work experience in the environmental field OR five years of work experience in the environmental field

Indigenous Peoples' Rights e-learning course (6 November-17 December 2013)

6 November-17 December 2013

This certificate course organised jointly by HREA and the Human Rights Centre of the UN-mandated University for Peace will address the broad spectrum of issues involved in the field of indigenous peoples' rights, beginning with who qualifies to be "indigenous peoples", the scope of their right to self-determination, the international and regional legal frameworks for the protection of their rights and the challenges associated therewith, and the debates surrounding the concept of indigenous governance.

This e-learning course involves approximately 30 hours of reading, interaction with students and instructor on discussion boards, quizzes and webinars. The course is based on a participatory, active learning approach, with an emphasis on critical reflection and peer-to-peer learning.

After this course, participants will be able to:
  • identify and apply the international law for protection of indigenous peoples' rights in specific contexts;
  • analyse divergent interests in policy making on indigenous governance models;
  • analyse and prepare reports on indigenous peoples' rights in the context of human development, human security and the MDGs;
  • apply the John Ruggie framework for business and human rights in the context of indigenous peoples' rights.

Week 4: Indigenous Peoples, Human Security and Human Development

Este curso organizado por HREA y el Centro de Derechos Humanos de la Universidad para la Paz abordará el amplio espectro de cuestiones relacionadas con los derechos de los pueblos indígenas, a partir de la definición de "pueblos indígenas", el alcance de su derecho a la libre determinación, los marcos jurídicos internacionales y regionales de protección de sus derechos y los retos asociados a los mismos.

Este curso en línea requiere aproximadamente 30 horas de lectura, interacción con los estudiantes y los instructores en los foros de discusión, presentaciones y algunos exámenes cortos y "webinars". El curso se basa en un enfoque de aprendizaje activo y participativo, con énfasis en la reflexión crítica y el aprendizaje grupal por la interacción entre compañeros.

Después de este curso, los participantes serán capaces de: 
  • identificar y aplicar derecho internacional para proteger los derechos de los pueblos indígenas en contextos específicos;
  • analizar intereses distintas en los debates sobre la política de la gobernanza indígena;
  • analizar y preparar informes sobre los derechos de los pueblos indígenas en el contexto del desarrollo humano, la seguridad humana y los ODM;
  • aplicar el sistema John Ruggie para las empresas y los derechos humanos en el contexto de los derechos de los pueblos indígenas.

Semana 5: Derechos de los pueblos indígenas y las corporaciones de negocios  
Semana 6: Conocimientos tradicionales, los derechos de propiedad intelectual y pueblos indígenas
